I am looking for a printable copy of the 2009 Reading List. Is it on this website?
    • Brenda Thompson 16 hours ago
You can find the 2009 reading list by clicking the Reading Lists tab in the blue box on the first page of this group.

I see 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, & 2112. Do you actually see 2009 on that list or are you assuming it is there? So far, I haven't been... able to see it! I tried printing off the 2010, and both left & right sides were cut off. Do you have the same problem? I am sorry to be a "pain" but I am working very hard promoting the reading program in my local unit and on the district level as well.moreless

I personnally upload the content to this site, and re-check it's availability before I send a link. The 2009 reading list is on page 2.
    • Velma Gross 15 hours ago
Oh, I am so sorry, but I did not see the second page. My mistake. Thank you so much for your patience and commitment.

"The Accidental Slaveowner" by Mark Auslander about the 1844 split in the Methodist Episcopal Church into northern and southern factions. ... It is eye-opening and educational; it affirms that we still have healing and reconciliation work to do within our denomination.moreless

We are completing the evaluation of books for the 2013 reading list, so your title recommendations will be considered for 2014. What issues and... topics are you interested in reading about? We will continue to look at human trafficking, social justice, and the environment; we will also look at domestic violence, the economy, and of course spiritual growth. moreless

I would like to see some books about mental illness. Women are at a great risk for violence, human tafficking, drugs and prostituion just because... they have an illness. One in four adults in the US has a diagnosable mental illness although only a third will ever receive treatment. People with a mental illness are still ostrasized in our society even though these are highly treatable illnesses. Our prisons and jails are full of people who are incarcerated for extened times because of untreated...moreless

I've gotten a lot out of "Thunder over Khandahar", "Miniskirts, Muslims, and Moms" and "For God and Country". I would... like to read more about the women and families who live under strict Sharia law. Sharia pops up in the news more and more often and if you look on the wiki article there is a map that shows where it is in place (not an insignificant portion of the world). You hear a lot of things about it and it would be good to get the facts out there as well as...moreless

One book that I am interested in reading, that has not been published yet is A Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans.

They can read books from the 2008 - 2012 reading lists.
    • Velma Gross 4 days ago
Yes, I realize that they may read books from the 2008-2012 lists. With only approximately a half dozen books listed for youth & children for each... of those five years, that is only a total of about 30 books. Level IV takes 20 so not enough books unread books left to read for the next year if they are once again working toward Level IV. For example, 2012 listed only 5 books for youth and 6 for children.moreless

Also more youth books are needed for slow reading adults. Some adults do not have the ability to read and comprehend many of the higher reading level... adult books listed. They in turn can read from the youth list. I have been able to get women enthusiastically reading the youth books, who have not read a book in years! There needs to be more youth and children's books included on the reading lists for this option also.moreless

I always read the children's books - they are among the best on the list. They show the reality of life in a different kind of way.
    • Velma Gross 2 days ago
Yes, Diane, the children's books are wonderful. As you know, they can be counted toward Levels III and IV.

You will find it by clicking on the "Books" on the main Reading Program page. Once you do that, look at the right hand side for the PDF file to download.

Really cool, Patricia. Thanks! For those books that are not on Kindle, you can let the publishers know that you would like it to be by selecting the... option on the book's page. (In the circle red area shown below, for Seeds of Change.) Please also bear in mind when you read all the great books selected for the Reading Program, that a lot of work and resources go into creating the lists each year. Perhaps with the savings from your Amazon purchase, you can make a donation to United Methodist...moreless

Catherine,I have already done that for all the books that don't already have a Kindle version. I did that last year and went back to some of them... later and they had added a Kindle version. Maybe not due to me, but I like to think I helped!moreless

So if you and I have done it, and half the folks here also do it, our message is getting stronger to those publishers. The power of many! Go UMW!

Thanks, this makes looking for kindle books much easier than last year.
    • Brenda Thompson 3 days ago
Titles that are available in e-reader formats are listed in the Reading Program catalog.
